Cambodia Page 2
This is the entrance to Banteay Srei, about 20 miles away from the main Angkor temple complexes.  It has only been safe to travel here for the past 2 or 3 years.
The carvings in the red sandstone have held up quite well.
Banteay Srei was totally different than the other temples and buildings at Angkor.  Most of those were enormous, with some as large as 2 miles on each side, and taller than the greatest cathedrals in the western world.  Banteay Srei was, like Lane, constructed on a miniature scale.
On our way back from Banteay Srei, we stopped at a small village.  The conditions, as you can see, were pretty basic.  There is obviously no electricity or running water.
Left, this woman was joking with Lane about how white (and sweaty) her skin is.  Luckily, our driver spoke excellent english and we were able to communicate with the locals.  Above, this is a kitchen, shared by a few homes.
This is Ta Prohm, where they have left the jungle almost entirely undisturbed. This place totally had a Raiders of the Lost Ark thing going.  More recently, "Tomb Raider," with Angelina Jolie was filmed at the Angkor complexes, and most of the filming was done at Ta Prohm.  This was one of our favorite temples, since you could really see how the jungle was able to swallow these enormous complexes to the point where most of the world forgot they existed.
The houses are all raised off of the ground to create storage space and also to provide some shade.  Did we mention that it is HOT in Cambodia?
Our friends gathered to say goodbye to us.  This is one of the few paved roads in the country, only recently paved so tourists can travel freely to Banteay Srei without being stopped by bandits.  The roads in Cambodia are extremely poor.  It takes 11 hours and a four while drive vehicle to travel between Siem Reap and Phnom Phen, the biggest city, even though it's a distance of only a couple of hundred miles.
Ride paddies.  They do not have irrigation in Cambodia, so they can only have one rice crop each year.  In Vietnam, irrigation allows two crops per year.  There is 3 month rice and 5 month rice, and we are told the 5 month rice tastes much better.  Please submit any further rice questions via email...
This truck has no interior, and is little more than wheels, a motor and a flatbed.  It is constructed this way to avoid taxation on automobiles, since trucks without an interior are taxed at a lower rate.  The cargo is trees used for construction in Siem Reap.
Judging by the looks on their faces, we looked pretty strange to these kids...
The kids had never seen a digital camera before and loved seeing their faces on the screen on the back of our camera.
There has to be a better place for this tree to grow.
I kept looking for Angelina Jolie -- now single we hear -- but all I kept seeing was these damn temples...
This is a three page update, and the link to page three is below.  Remember, if any of the pictures fail to load, just right click on the empty spot and select "Show Picture."
