Greece May 30-June 13, 2003 |

We stayed in Athens for one night before heading south to the Greek Islands.
We did a little sightseeing and worked on our jet lag. |

Our next stop was the island of Santorini. We stayed in the town of Fira, which
is built right into the rim of an ancient volcano and overlooks the crater
left by an enormous eruption several thousand years ago. Lots of steps. |

We met up with my sister for a few days in Santorini, since she was traveling in
Europe after her semester in London. |

The town of Oia in Santorini is famous for great sunsets. |

Another nice sunset viewed from our hotel in Fira, Santorini. |
We visited the ruins of the prehistoric town of Akrotiri on the way to a red sand
beach with crystal clear water. |
No stop in Santorini would be complete without a stop at a few of the vineyards on
the island. And, as we learned on our trip last year, Lane can find a way
to step in nastiness anywhere in the world. |
After Santorini, Lane and I took the ferry to Paros and Shanna headed to Ios.
Paros was a charming island and is not as centered on tourism as Santorini. |
Paros was filled with narrow stone streets and climbing flowers. |
Some of the fishing boats in the harbor at Paros...fishing is still a popular industry
on the island. |
The island of Mykonos was our last stop. The island has some great beaches
and a really fun, cosmopolitan town. It must be horribly overcrowded in the
high season of July and August, but it was great in June. |

Two weeks of great weather means two weeks of great sunsets. This one is in
Little Venice on Mykonos. |
The clear water on Paradise Beach on Mykonos. Even though it was 90 degrees
every day, the cool wind right off of the Aegean made the temperature feel perfect.

The Greek flag flying in the breeze over Elia Beach on Mykonos. |
