Vietnam Photos Page Two
The country is full of these trucks.  They are little more than a motor, frame and wheels.  And, yes, that is a hand crank you see in front.  It is used to start the engine.  The trucks are built in China from a 1950s design.  The cabin is a thin shell of crudely shaped metal.
The bustling harbor in the morning at Cat Ba island.
Lane outside the Hue citadel.  The thing around her neck is a "Coolit," which is basically a sponge wrapped in fabric that you soak in cold water to try and keep cool.  We found out that nothing keeps you cool.
Because it is so large, we each had a zyclo to take us around the citadel.  We chose this one because the driver was wearing a Yankees hat.  The zyclos cost about $1 per hour.
An American M48 tank captured by the North Vietnamese.
A little propaganda and some questionable english.
On the left, a close-up of one of the carved paintings found throughout the citadel.  Above, one of many billboards that appear all over Vietnam.  This one was on the road from Hue to Hoi An.  I have no idea what this one says, but I bet it's not an ad for the democratic party.
A tree and some of the smaller rocks on the road to Hoi An.
This is supposedly one of the best roads in the country.
The market in Hoi An.  Every town and city revolves around a market, or several markets.  Also, they use the same 15 names for the streets in every city, which is kind of funny.
Lane at the edge of the market, on the river that runs through Hoi An.  We have been on enough questionable boats, so we passed on one of the boat tours you see in the background.
We rode bikes to Cua Dai beach in Hoi An a couple of times.
Lane at Cua Dai beach, and some hawkers that were trying to sell us the strangest stuff.  We couldn't recognize most of what they were selling, although one thing did look a little like peanut brittle.  All of the hawkers sold the exact same things, too.  If they sold water, they'd do a lot more business...
Foot massage on the beach, baby.
Lane at a custom tailor in Hoi An.
This, my friends, is a gas station.  The hotel driver was taking a group of us to town, and ran out of gas.  Luckily, we were right in front of this gas station.  There are no pumps, just barrels of gasoline.  And yes, that is a watering can she is using to measure the gas.
Our hotel in Hoi An had a beautiful pool.  Unfortunately, the water was so hot from the sun that it was not refreshing in the slightest.  It was actually warmer than our bodies.  Of course, I'm looking pretty darn relaxed here, so I'm not complaining...
The beach in Nha Trang.  We did our scuba diving at the farthest island you see in the distance.

Vietnam was a great mix of adventure, meeting people, seeing some crazy things and finding some time for the beach.  The traveling was a little challenging at times, but it was totally worth it to get off the beaten path.  We'll post our Cambodia photos in the next day or two.  Best wishes to everyone back home!
This boy came up and splashed me, and I taught him the meaning of the word "escalation."  The kids were so playful all over the country.
